New Chef to join the Gather Foods team

Celebrated Perth chef Eddie Bulatao joins Gather Foods to follow his passion for native foods and carve a new genre of experience dining.

Perth’s culinary scene is set to experience something truly spectacular after rising star chef Eddie Bulatao announced his departure from his prominent role at members-only club, Lawson Flats, to take up the position of Head Chef at the award-winning Indigenous catering and events company, Gather Foods.

Bulatao, says he has always held a strong fascination for bush-tucker and foraging and is looking forward to exploring and experimenting with a vast breadth of ingredients as he takes the helm at the Gather Foods kitchens.

“Learning new things is what feeds my creativity in the kitchen, and the fact that we walk past extraordinary bush tucker flavours every day means there is an explosion of opportunity to bring something new to the table.

“Gather Foods will enable me to learn from our original landowners in an extremely intimate way. This includes mandatory foraging outings with Aboriginal elders and experts to introduce me to traditional practices and new ingredients. To explain the weight of this, I currently work with around 12 native ingredients, and I am told there are hundreds to explore, so the potential is enormous.”

Gather Foods blasted onto the culinary stage in recent years as an Aboriginal-owned food company that ‘brings 60,000 years of Aboriginal wisdom and sustainable practices to every dish, event and experience’. Its mission is to ‘transform Aboriginal lives and the food industry’ by using culinary creativity and experience dining to build bridges and awareness of Indigenous cultures, as well as change the trajectory of young Aboriginals through opportunity, training and empowerment.

Gather Foods Managing Director and Nyoongar traditional landowner, Gerry Matera, said the

leadership appointment of Eddie shows how much the company has grown and demonstrates the inclusive nature of the business. He believes the fusion of Eddie’s standout talents and traditional produce and techniques will be the ‘secret sauce’ for Gather Foods to take its experience dining to the next level.

“There is great momentum in the marketplace for a new wave of dining experiences that

‘dazzles’ in terms of location, service and, of course, taste. As a business, we have the flexibility to transform rooftops into spectacular private dining spots for weddings and events and turn corporate functions into meaningful and memorable experiences,” he said.

“Eddie has blown the hospitality industry away with his interpretation of ingredients and we are all very excited to see how this transpires on the plate at Gather Foods.”

Eddie will become responsible for the range of Gather Foods retail items, which includes our award-winning native ice cream, as well as creating our new menus for corporate and private events that tell Indigenous stories through fresh locally sourced produce and native foods.

“Stepping away from the conventional restaurant scene is perhaps a bold move for a chef of my experience, but the buzz around experience dining in Perth is really exciting and I want to carve a genre that keeps Indigenous learnings and customs alive,” Eddie continued.

“It is a great honour to be invited into and trusted by the community.”

Eddie cut his teeth in Perth’s restaurant scene working for CBD fine diner, Any, and Coogee Common, before taking on a role in charge of in-house all-day dining at Lawsons Flats. He is known for his attention to detail and has been hailed as a ‘rising star’ of the culinary scene.

Awards and was recognised with the Judges’ Award at the Belmont & WA Small Business Awards.
